Preparing CV / Resume - Points to note

Preparing one’s resume is an art; as this is the first round of selection process. Your resume is complete reflection of your personality and capability. It is often said that first impression is last impression. It may not be 100% true but to get to even start line of competition, it is certainly true.

So what should be done to make it impressive?

Firstly, please make it presentable in format and layout. All information should be neatly laid out in proper sequence and chronological order. While you must put in all relevant details to showcase your capability, be precise and to the point. Don’t be verbose and leave certain aspects for the personal interview too.

Secondly, now-a-days employers want to see you on CV itself, especially for jobs in front office, secretarial, marketing/ sales, customer care and public relations etc, where you represent the organisation. Please put in your passport type latest photograph in formal dress. Look formal & officious and not like one put in modelling portfolio.

Thirdly, your writing skills and English reflects your communication skills. Write correct words for correct expressions/ statements and be grammatically correct. Please do not write confusing English and certainly not the language used in SMSs.

Fourthly, do not commit mistake of preparing and sending ‘fit all’ type generic Resume. Each job requirements are peculiar and your resume must reflect your suitability for the same in terms of qualification and experience. You might have to prepare number of sets to highlight different strong points of your capabilities. It doesn’t mean making false profiles but it means preparing suitable resumes for each job/ vacancy with little modifications in your master resume.

Fifthly, you must know what you sent to each company and should be able to explain what each word or sentence means in your resume. Do not write something that you do not know; just because it looked appealing in somebody else’s resume.

Sixthly, please update your resume periodically; even the one floating on job portals. Never send an old resume with gaps or with latest job/ location/ salary details missing.

Seventhly, there is no perfect format. Everybody has his own idea of formats and sequence. So don’t worry much on this account as long as you followed a logical sequence.

Last but not the least, Trust your destiny and all the best!
