Preparing CV / Resume - Points to note

Preparing one’s resume is an art; as this is the first round of selection process. Your resume is complete reflection of your personality and capability. It is often said that first impression is last impression. It may not be 100% true but to get to even start line of competition, it is certainly true.

So what should be done to make it impressive?

Firstly, please make it presentable in format and layout. All information should be neatly laid out in proper sequence and chronological order. While you must put in all relevant details to showcase your capability, be precise and to the point. Don’t be verbose and leave certain aspects for the personal interview too.

Secondly, now-a-days employers want to see you on CV itself, especially for jobs in front office, secretarial, marketing/ sales, customer care and public relations etc, where you represent the organisation. Please put in your passport type latest photograph in formal dress. Look formal & officious and not like one put in modelling portfolio.

Thirdly, your writing skills and English reflects your communication skills. Write correct words for correct expressions/ statements and be grammatically correct. Please do not write confusing English and certainly not the language used in SMSs.

Fourthly, do not commit mistake of preparing and sending ‘fit all’ type generic Resume. Each job requirements are peculiar and your resume must reflect your suitability for the same in terms of qualification and experience. You might have to prepare number of sets to highlight different strong points of your capabilities. It doesn’t mean making false profiles but it means preparing suitable resumes for each job/ vacancy with little modifications in your master resume.

Fifthly, you must know what you sent to each company and should be able to explain what each word or sentence means in your resume. Do not write something that you do not know; just because it looked appealing in somebody else’s resume.

Sixthly, please update your resume periodically; even the one floating on job portals. Never send an old resume with gaps or with latest job/ location/ salary details missing.

Seventhly, there is no perfect format. Everybody has his own idea of formats and sequence. So don’t worry much on this account as long as you followed a logical sequence.

Last but not the least, Trust your destiny and all the best!

HR Excellence in current Global Economic Scenario

Dear All,

1. Having attended couple of seminars on the subject topic, I think we need to understand the problems in correct perspective and on bigger canvas.

2. I think, main threats are as follows:-

(a) Laid off educated and well qualified but unemployed people will become restless and resort to crimes to get money. Because of reasonable intelligence level, these crimes will be well planned and executed with precision, making it difficult for the police to catch. They will therefore be threats to you, your family and assets.

(b) Because of stiff competition to out do each other, to save one's job, friends will become competitor thus eroding the team values. Each will try to take credit for success and blame others for failure besides other unwarranted & unethical tricks.

(c) To save their jobs, people are working like mad thus risking their health, family life, mental & emotional well being. This tension will soon burn them out and telling effect will be visible on everything.

(d) Families and children are living in fear & tension. Parents are more worried than the employees themselves. Happiness and laughter is loosing its shine in public places. What a transformation of society in such a little time of just about six months. It is doomed because of fear of unknown and uncertain future.

3. Possible options and solutions, one can suggest are:-

(a) Share the poverty too, reduce profit margins, adopt austerity in every thing, reduce pays but do not lay off people unless closing down a set up all together. In that case too, help employees re-settle, keep track and maintain contacts with ex-employee for emotional support at least. It will prevent development of forced criminals and make society safer.

(b) Maintain a balance in work place, stop overtime for physically, medically and emotionally healthier employees and society.

(c) Prevent panic, organize family get together, enhance the team spirits, assure them that we shall stand together in tough time and will soon over come the problems for a even brighter future.

(d) Talk facts and use common sense to find practical & viable solutions and for God's sake, stop discussing bookish knowledge and theories. Show the door to the people who are good in only speaking English and power point presentations. Get the practical men to work.

4. Now, I would only request the HR Heads to not only initiate above processes but also spend time to understand the possible scenarios in six months, one year and two years from now; plan for the contingencies and possible options to retain or recruit new employees in those time frames as per the contingencies/ options; plan where to find them, track them now, initiate contacts and follow them. That is how you may hope to get the best and just in time.

5. Being a HR & placement consultant, it is little difficult to gauge the true problem of individual companies and hence views expressed are generic in nature on common problems as visualized. Each company or set up has to find solutions to their set of problem within this frame work. Remember, it is easy to plan but very difficult to execute; it is difficult to win the trust back specially from the people who are under fear or suffered a set back. One has to implement such programs as team, be persistent and patient, to succeed.

6. God willing, we shall prevail.

Good luck,

Vinod

What I said few days back on 15 Sep 08 has come true!

1. If you read my post of 15 Sep 08 on this very blog, you should not be surprised seeing the things happening the way I predicted and in a short span of 7 days only.
2. Killing of Mr Chowdhary and injuring several other senior managers of Graziano Co. in Noida, India on 22 Sep 08, by the employees who were laid off about 2 months back, are the signs of social unrest that we are going to face in this situation? Couple of enterpreneurs have commited suisides in NCR region because of these very reasons of economic downturn.
3. Writing is clear on the wall. Now the question is that if we can forsee the events with fair amount of certainty, why are we not initiating the corrective measures in time?
4. I expect few suggestions from my learned readers because it is our problem as a soceity and nobody can be immune from the grave implications if the frustration bursts out the way it did in Noida. We have to face it point blank and face it now.
5. One of the way I can suggest to the Industry is, to reduce the salary across the board as cost cutting to prevent layoffs. Under-performers may face more cuts but at least will get the money to feed his dependents. This will keep the criminal outburst in check for the time being till either the situation improves in that specific Co. or other avenues where the employees laid off may find employment.
6. I am available to discuss other options also with anyone who is interested. I also sincerely invite the suggestions on this problem which is worldwide and not limited to India alone.

Where will the people being laid off from Industry, go ?

1. Has anybody given a thought where these hundred of thousands of people go who are being laid out due to economic slow down?

2. As I can foresee, it is going to be a social crisis due to following implications:-
(a) People accepting lower standard jobs will have an hurt ego which will have its own effect in the environment, on & off work.
(b) For money they may resort to criminal activities.
(c) Suicides may go up thus breaking down more families and affecting their children.

3. Solution? There are few but let me get some from the readers before I give possible options.
